WIP Wed. once more

After taking a much-needed hiatus from the record-keeping, I've decided to join the festivities again at Lee's blog Freshly Pieced for .

Sadly, I've also decided to abandon my initial list of UFOs on this forum. It seems that projects for the present and future are taking precedent, which is just fine by me.

WIP Wed - a month of Sundays

Wow, it's been quite a while. But what better way to reintroduce myself to the blogging world than to do a WIP Wednesday entry and link it to Kati's guest post at Freshly Pieced?


In mid-June I made a point of finishing up some big projects in order to get ready to leave town for a few weeks. I had some quilts to complete and pack off to send to Sisters, OR (more on that in a later post) as well as fulfill some Etsy orders.

A good chunk of my trip away from home was spent taking an amazing 5 day workshop from Jane Sassaman. I got the pleasure of not only meeting and learning from this lovely, down-to-earth, creative powerhouse, but also met some wonderful ladies from around the world (there was one woman in from Sydney!) and best of all, hanging out with my mom! The workshop is entitled Abstracting From Nature, and though Jane adeptly describes her techniques and freely gives input on compositional and creative choices, each student's piece had a very different style and feel. Some examples:

I still have lots of work yet to do on this puppy (or rather poppy), but am happy with the progress I made while in Greenville, NY.

And coming back to reality, my only time in the sewing studio since returning home was dedicated to finishing my June bee blocks for Eileen, in the Friends + Fabric Bee. She chose a paper piecingtutorial from Nydia who blogs at The ADD Crafter, Basketweave Braid Star Block.

Though not complex, this block is definitely a time-sucker. But on the plus side, it was TRULY a scrap-buster as well - I could work exclusively from my basket of strips up until adding the white background pieces.

So, I feel like I've been taking a summer hiatus which began about a month before summer. And it may continue longer than I'd like, but 'tis the season for family visits, gardening, cycling, and making up for a Vitamin D deficiency from the last 8 or 9 months! But do please bear with me and I promise to get back into the swing of things and hopefully find new inspiration to share soon!

WIP Wed - abridged

My blogging has suffered in the last few weeks. Perhaps my sewing has as well, since I've noticed my skin is starting to tan - a good indication that I am taking as much advantage of the gorgeous weather as I am able!

However, I HAVE been working on a few things, just nothing very update-worthy. But, in the spirit of the WIP Wednesday, here is a look at a couple of things on my list:

I've also been trying to get my Lock 'n' Bolt quilt quilted. Making progress, but had to bring the operation home since I've not been able to spend much time at the studio since last week...

I've begun playing with Lee's spiderweb blocks for the Friends + Fabric Bee, but haven't gotten enough done on them to take photos. I'll hopefully have more to share on that front next week! This weekend is going to be all about the catch-up!

An overdue WIP Wednesday

Came to fruition from a sketch in my sketchbook, with a kick in the pants from PMQG (indirectly). This was in response to the call for submissions for our guild's special exhibition at Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show this summer, and I am pleased to share that this was also among the quilts selected to be a part of that! Thank you to the lovely judges (Michelle, Gail, Ale and I believe Heather too)!!

WIP Wednesday - starting from scratch

I'm taking a new approach, after my cataloging of UFOs earlier this week, which I wrote about here. I came up with 17 already begun UFOs (spanning the last 5 or 6 years), not to mention 6 projects in the idea stage only (perhaps the fabric gathering stage, but not further than that).

Since one of my goals for this year is to chip away at that list of UFOs, I've decided to start my count there. I'll cut myself a *little* slack and not include the stacks of fabric waiting for action as WIPs!

Some Progress
So, the UFO I was able to strike off the list this past week (or rather, move to another list of completed quilt tops yet to be quilted) is the one mentioned in my previous post, resurrected from the pieces of a set of place mats that was just not to be!

I'm also finally making some headway with another project that's been lying in a basket off and on for the last couple of years...

I'm hoping to finish this top within the next week or so.

Now, I must admit I AM guilty of one new project! I've been lusting after one of the luscious AMH louLouthi flannels that Marie has at Cool Cottons, but since I rarely if ever work with flannel, I couldn't justify buying any. But sitting on my couch one evening, just dreaming up possible projects for this fabric, I figured why not make myself a flannel throw quilt?? Really, Lin, there's no reason you shouldn't treat yourself to a little gift, right?? So, today I picked up a lovely stack of flannels, which also happen to work with a few FQs I picked up a couple of years ago for burp cloths that never got made.

Can't wait to get started on these guys!! Y'all will probably see something soon!

WIP Wed - a little catch-up

As I sit here after a lovely dinner of mac 'n' cheese from a box, watching the last disc of Project Runway Season 1, I am trying to take stock of the activity of the last week or two. And then I'll be linking up with Lee at her blog Freshly Pieced.

I managed to get my tutorial up for the March round of the Friends + Fabric Stash Bee, a wonky diamond log cabin block

Also, along with finishing the quilting on the wall hanging I'm making for the For the Love of Solids swap on Flickr, I whipped up a small set of coasters from some of the scraps

And it has occurred to me that I have somewhat neglected my Etsy shop in the last few weeks. At the small craft bazaar that Saskia (the lovely and creative environmental chemist behind Base Natural) and I attended in December, I was asked if I had a wider selection of pot holders, and since then I've sold a couple of sets, so it's about time I replenish.

And as for continuing projects...
I finally basted and have started quilting the November quilt for the Bliss circle of do. Good Stitches

I've also added another quilt top to my growing pile of quilt tops awaiting quilting (though I suppose we can call it even with the previous project coming off of that pile!) - the Encapsulated quilt that I had started several years ago in a class with Portland quilt artist and teacher Lee Fowler.

And now there's the big sigh of relief. Coming in JUST under the wire is the already too often mentioned Tangerine and Wine quilt! Complete! However, not quite finished... I have it posted to the Flickr group for the Tangerine Tango Challenge but have been struggling with the photos for the MQG call for entries for the 2012 Fall Quilt Festival in Houston. Their photo requirements are strict! And I'm sure I'm overthinking it, but that's my nature. So, I have Wednesday and Thursday to get a couple of good photos of this quilt, with the perfect lighting and not needing any color correction (I've already taken dozens of photos, both full shots and details) in order to make that deadline.

It's funny how keeping track of one's days like this makes it seem to go that much faster. But the time is passing regardless, no?

I've had a few things going this week, but the bulk of my time has been concentrated on... can you guess it?? Yup, the Tangerine and Wine quilt. So, I suppose I'll start with my continuations:

The aforementioned Tangerine and Wine Quilt. I finished piecing the top, backing, pin-basted and started quilting.

Finished quilting my main project for For the Love of Solids 2.

I have yet to put binding and hanging sleeve or loops on. Need to get more fabric when I head in to work today.

WIP Wednesday - is it already??

Well, kind of like Lee stated in her post, I don't have a whole lot to report, mainly because I have spent the last week concentrating on one particular project - and I'm not ready to show it just yet (though I do have a sneak peek!)

The focus of the last week for me has been this curved piecing project about which I've posted a couple of times, here and here. I'm hoping to have this completed in time to submit both for the Tangerine Tango Challenge that Ali and Erin are hosting on Flickr, as well as the MQG show at the 2012 International Quilt Festival in Houston. I now have (24) 15 1/2" blocks completed, though I only plan to use 20. I'm in the process of playing with arrangements on my design wall, and might actually work on a couple of other things over the next day or two while I contemplate overall layout. But here's a peek at a couple of the blocks together:

I also managed to sneak in a bee block this week for Design Camp [Think Outside the Block] Swap. February is Leona's month in our group, and she chose a fabulous concept based on a piece she made for the first round of the For the Love of Solids swap! My one last WIP that I actually worked on this week is of the knitty variety. Working on that hood by Lee Meredith, fellow Portlander. I first posted about it here.

WIP Wednesday - too many new!

There are actually quite a few things to report on this week, I am pleased to say! Last week and weekend I got some good, full work days at the studio, and new projects and inspirations on the horizon.

New Projects
We'll start small... I got a couple of sets of napkins squared away.

These would have been ready sooner except I was carrying them in a bag with a bottle of Best Press that decided to leak and soak a stinky, flowery starch alternative all over. Blech! Second round in the washer ensued.

and have selected fabrics to try again, hoping the end result will be of a quality to submit for the MQG section of the 2012 Int'l. Quilt Festival in Houston this fall.

WIP Wed... not much progress

As I've been glancing at several other people's WIP Wednesday blog postings I've learned that I am far from the only person who has been down with some winter bug or other. That's just such a bummer all around, so I am sorry for all of you out there feeling crummy this season - hope you get your health and spark back soon!!

That said, this posting is going to be pretty light on accomplishments. I work my tail off last Thursday before our monthly Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting, trying to finish piecing the do.Good Stitches Bliss top in time for show and tell. On Thursday I was only this far:

This was still in about 7 or 8 different sections on my design wall - not terribly portable;-)

Then, yesterday after spending Friday-Sunday not leaving my home, and Monday taking it somewhat easy, I got back to the studio and got the rest of this put together. Still have to trim the left side and bottom before basting and quilting, but glad to have gotten this thing together. It's a bit busier than I had anticipated, but hopefully won't be too much for whomever ends up receiving it in the end!

And just out of curiosity, who else is participating in this round of the For the Love of Solids swap? I wrote a short post about my progress a couple of nights ago, found here. So far I've gotten a couple of sketches done, and was able to gather some fabrics yesterday and today to play with.

Is it looking bright and rainbowy yet??

Unfortunately, that's about all I have! I did bring with me to work today the oval template for the Encapsulated quilt and some freezer paper to trace onto, so hopefully I'll be a couple of steps closer to a finish for next week! Oh, and I made a commitment and counted the actual number of finished quilt tops I have just waiting to be quilted (including a couple of minis): 15!

Never too late (I hope)

As a periodic blog reader I undoubtedly came across all of the WIP Wednesday posts (hosted by Lee at Freshly Pieced) during 2011. As a novice blog writer, I wasn't ready to take on such a commitment.

It's a new year, right? Is anyone else feeling the magic of January 2012?

So, I know I missed the first installment, but I figure better late than never, yes? So, here's MY first contribution to the list-making, track-keeping, over-sharing of WAY TOO MANY things on my plate!

I'll begin with the UFOs. One of my goals this year is to address several (if not all) of the projects that were begun in years past, then shelved indefinitely, primarily because they were either from classes I took but didn't follow through on, or simply because the gift-making and etsy-friendly projects took precedent.

A partial quilt top and blocks from a class with Lee Fowler entitled Encapsulated, which I took from her over 5 years ago, easily (back when StoryQuilts had a storefront in Beaverton, OR, where I had the pleasure of working for an all-too-quick year+)

My Summertime Stars quilt using Amy Butler's "Love" – discussed in detail in this post from yesterday.

A quilt top awaiting quilting for the past 2-3 years. I pin-basted it on Tuesday. Honestly, it is one of about 7 tops that need to be quilted, but I'm only going to address them a little at a time (I hope that's within the rules!!)

Half of my blocks for my second version of the Warm-Cool Quilt Along, hosted by Jeni at In Color Order.

NEXT on the list are projects that are in process, but begun *relatively* recently:

Got the majority of my bee blocks from the Seams Perfect Modern Scrap Bee pieced into a completed top, now I just need to piece the backing and quilt it (though this one I MIGHT farm out... we'll see!)

I've been adding to my received blocks from September's Nubees block swap on Flickr. I now have as many as I want, with the sashing fabric around each one. I think I might need to audition another background possibility, but if I DO end up going with this Michael Miller fabric, I'll still need to get a bit more.

And finally...

Another quilt top that's been hanging out on a shelf for quite a while, which I finished quilting this past week, and am just in the process of binding.
